November 2015
We are delighted to report that West Papuan political prisoner Filep Karma has at long last been freed from prison, following years of pressure and campaigning by human rights groups and international governments.
Filep was imprisoned in 2004 and served part of a 15 year sentence for participating in a peaceful independence demonstration and for raising the Morning Star flag, an important Papuan symbol of independence.
Thanks to our loyal supporters we were able to provide a grant to Filep to enable him to travel to the Indonesian capital and to have the treatment he needed for a suspected colon tumor, during his incarceration.
We wish Filep and his family well on his road to recovery.
